Materials and Craftsmanship
Straw marquetry is a traditional French decorative craft, today practised by a small number of workshops in France. The floor lamp is made with rye straw, grown and dyed in Burgundy. Each strand is then prepared individually, split open with a bone folder, flattened, then cut and trimmed, before being laid by hand onto the volumes, strand by strand.
The cubes that make up the structure are designed, printed and prepared in Stanislas Garaud's studio. They are made of PLA, a plant-based polymer, which serves as the support for the marquetry. Digital fabrication thus gives shape to the Pyrite geometry, before the straw provides its finish.
When the composition includes gilding, it is carried out by Stanislas Garaud. The leaf comes from Giusto Manetti Battiloro, a family-run company in Florence that has practised the craft of gold beating since 1600.
The marble base is selected for each piece according to the tone of the stem, its variety thus able to differ from one piece to another.
The shade, here in cotton, is made in France. Its shape and dimensions are fixed. The fabric and the frame's colour, however, are chosen for each piece to match the composition.
This range of skills, digital and manual alike, is coordinated in full by Stanislas Garaud, from the initial design through to final assembly.
Edition
The floor lamp is produced in an edition of 12. Each piece has its own combination of tones and materials. No two colour combinations are identical within the edition.
Pieces are made to order, following a shared process combining the design and fabrication of the volumes in Stanislas Garaud's studio, the preparation and laying of the straw marquetry, then the making of the marble base. When the chosen composition includes gold leaf gilding, it is carried out by the designer.
The colour palette draws on the tones offered by the straw producer, complemented by colours that Stanislas Garaud develops and refines himself. Colour combinations are defined for each piece, to build a composition that is entirely its own.
The choice of marble also contributes to this singularity, each base being selected to match the tone of the stem it supports. The shade's fabric and frame colour follow the same logic, while its shape and dimensions remain constant.
Each floor lamp is thus a singular piece within a limited edition. From design to final assembly, Stanislas Garaud each piece and is directly involved in its making.
